My Writing Journey
I think I still have one of the first stories I ever wrote around here somewhere. It’s about a skeleton man called Mr Bones who can’t find one of his leg bone anywhere so he hops around trying to find it (it turns out his skeleton dog had stolen it and buried it in the garden).
It’s even fully illustrated! I might dig it out and scan it on here later, but first I must point out that I was only about 7 at the time!
It must have been around the time of Mr Bones that I caught the writing bug, as after then I would often be found scribbling away in the corner coming up with more masterpieces for my poor parents/friends/teachers to suffer through! It was jointly their praise and that feeling of being lost in the places I’d created that spurred me on.
Being the youngest child with two older brothers made me more adventurous thank I might have been otherwise. I never wanted to be left out of anything and so found myself exploring caves and woods and climbing the tallest trees. I soon found one of the best places to explore was the imagination which turned our places into pirate coves, magical forests and fortresses. Writing these adventures down and more became a fun way to extend out play time. Some of our games became mini-series of their own and even started to infiltrate my dreams!
I soon discovered the joys of horse riding and so my stories turned naturally to those of a young girl who wants desperately to have a horse of her own and… well you can guess how they turned out!
After a family tragedy my writing darkened considerably and I found writing could be a great means of escaping the real world, even if it’s just for a short while. I also discovered how to put real feelings about real situations into my writing under a different guise.
As I got older I learnt about the more technical sides of writing, punctuation, grammar, spelling etc (although I still have a huge amount to learn there!), which helped my stories to make sense to people other than myself and my brothers… I’d like to think so anyway! Recently I’ve found a number of writing message boards, which have been invaluable help with things like characterisation, planning, plot structure and countless other things besides.
As it stands I have a number of unfinished manuscripts that petered out due mainly to lack of planning. My current project is an adult fantasy series set in another world. I’m working on the world building at the moment, but a few stories have sparked from creating the world and I think once I have it finished I’ll have some good stuff to work with.
At the very least I have an undiscovered horizon ahead of me and that’s really all I need.
